Basements and moisture go hand-in-hand. Unfortunately, this makes it easy for mold to enter the equation. Mold prevention is much less daunting than mold removal. Keep your basement clean and mold-free with these tips. Then, if you notice musty odors, stained walls and ceilings, or visible mold growth, arrange professional mold remediation services as soon as possible.

  • Clean regularly: Just because the basement isn’t your main living space doesn’t mean you should neglect it. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter and wipe down surfaces regularly to reduce the possibility of mold growth.
  • Run a dehumidifier: The subterranean nature of basements means they are more humid than the rest of your house. To combat this, consider setting up a portable dehumidifier to extract excess moisture from the air.
  • Run the basement bathroom exhaust fan: Showering produces heat and steam, which can promote mold growth. If you have a bathroom in the basement, make sure you run the exhaust fan during and for 20 minutes after every shower. This vents moisture outside to help the bathroom remain mold-free.
  • Keep porous materials to a minimum: Avoid storing clothes, books, loose papers, and other absorbent materials in the basement. If you have no other option, keep these items in plastic containers, not cardboard boxes. Installing non-porous ceramic or porcelain tiles instead of carpet or wood flooring also reduces the chance of mold under your basement floors.
  • Repair plumbing leaks as soon as possible: Keep an eye on your pipes and plumbing fixtures to ensure none of them are leaking. If you discover water damage, hire a plumber to repair the leak before mold has a chance to set in.
  • Clean the gutters: Clogged gutters and downspouts permit rainwater to drain next to the foundation, increasing the likelihood of basement flooding and mold growth. Cleaning your gutters twice a year is an easy way to prevent this.
  • Check the soil grading around your house: The way water drains from your property as a whole is also important. Make sure the ground slopes away from the foundation so runoff is not directed toward the basement wall.
  • Install a sump pump: Rising groundwater is a major concern in many parts of the country. Control this source of water damage and mold growth by installing a sump pump in the basement.
  • Waterproof the basement walls: Any holes or cracks along the rim joist may allow water to enter when it rains. Moisture may even percolate through the walls if they lack proper waterproofing. You’ll need to plug holes, fill cracks, seal openings, and apply a waterproof coating to keep your basement dry.

If you find mold in the basement, you may be able to remove it yourself.
