Fourth of July Safety

Fourth of July is just around the corner, and while it is a great time of year to visit with friends and family – grilling, swimming and lighting up the sky with fireworks, it can also be dangerous if certain precautions are neglected. Remind your clients of these safety hazards, so they can safely celebrate America’s independence!

Outdoor Safety

With July being the hottest month of the year, it’s especially important to take extra precaution when exposed to the sun. Heatstroke can be severely damaging or fatal. So, be aware of the signs and follow these tips when planning to be outside.

  • Wear sunscreen and apply regularly.
  • Dress appropriately – Consider loose fitted and light-colored clothing, a hat, sunglasses, etc.
  • Drink water more often than usual, especially if also consuming soda or alcoholic products.
  • Seek out shady or air-conditioned areas to stay cool.
  • Limit your time outdoors in extreme heat.

Grilling Safety

If hosting or attending a barbecue, practice safety and prepare for possible fire hazards.

  • Only use your grill outdoors on a flat surface, and place well away from the home or anything that could catch fire.
  • Never leave your grill unattended, and keep children and pets away from the grill area.
  • Keep your grill clean, and remove any grease buildup.
  • Keep your sleeves rolled up, and keep other loose clothing away from the grill.
  • Always keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Never use water to put out grease fire.

Fireworks Safety

While fireworks have become a celebratory tradition for Fourth of July, they can also be very dangerous if not handled properly.

  • Familiarize yourself with your local, regional regulations about use of fireworks.
  • Before you even remove the fireworks from their packaging, familiarize yourself with all the instructions.
  • Choose a wide open, flat site outdoors, free from trees, grass and buildings that could catch fire.
  • Eye protection is strongly advised when lighting fireworks.
  • Make sure to keep water nearby to fully extinguish any used fireworks, and enough to quickly extinguish any potential fires.
  • Keep at a safe distance, as directed by the warning label, and ensure all spectators do so as well.
