New Year. New Office. Part IV

Jan 29, 2015

By: Chelsea Haley, DKI Ventures, LLC

January is almost over, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late to start more New Year resolutions for the office. Here’s an idea that can be integrated whenever, and can help increase productivity, using little to no money.

Consider saving a space in the office for employees to take a break away from their desks.

  • Throw some lounge chairs or even floor pillows in a corner for 15 to 20 minute catnaps.
  • Hold a daily 15-minute yoga session. Provide yoga mats and perform a basic, quick routine to rejuvenate the mind.
  • Build a small library with a simple bookshelf and books from garage sales or donations from the employees.

Fifteen to twenty minutes shouldn’t ruin your day’s work. In fact, it is essential for effective productivity to shut down your brains for just a few minutes a day, in between tasks. Just like a computer needs to reboot every now and then, so do our brains, especially when they are on information-overload, staring at a computer screen all day, every day.

I know, I know, sometimes you just don’t have 15 minutes. Well, how about two, then?

Sit back, listen to the waves and empty your mind for just two minutes. – StumbleUpon

New Year. New Office. Part III

Jan 21, 2014

By: Chelsea Haley, DKI Ventures, LLC

Last week we discussed the value of allowing employees’ to embellish the office walls with their ideas and proposals. In order to get these creative juices flowing though, the mind needs to be alert.

Light

Make sure the office is well lit. Light is great for boosting brain power and production. If certain rooms have windows, open them. Natural sunlight is best for the brain to awaken and be active.

Openness

Consider tearing down those cubicle walls that isolate employees from one another, and open up the office! A study, led by Psychologist Franklin Becker, PhD, director of the Cornell University International Workplace Studies Program found that “Open work spaces foster more employee productivity, learning and camaraderie than do closed offices or cubicles.”

So, open the office and let the light shine through. This will better the employees’ mindsets at work and help them stay focused, while also opening the door for collaboration among each other.

New Year. New Office. Part II

Jan 9, 2015

By: Chelsea Haley, DKI Ventures, LLC

As we learned from last week’s color post, splashing the walls and office with some color can liven a room and environment to induce creativity, while allowing employees to adorn their own space with personal items can make a more appealing office environment. In addition, merging all employees’ personalities can invoke inspiration.

Google is the epitome of utilizing design for an effective workplace. Unfortunately, not every business has a comparable budget to redesign their office space. However, it’s easy to recreate some of Google’s ideas in a budget-friendly way.

For an example related to integrating all individualities into one, the company is lined with whiteboard walls, inspiring creativity and innovation throughout the campus. This can easily and inexpensively be replicated for a small-business. Simply head to a local supply or hardware store and pick up some dry-erase 11whiteboard paint and some colorful whiteboard markers. You can choose to paint the whole office or just one wall for an “idea board.” This inexpensive redesign will help cover your walls with inspiration and color!

Who grew up being told if you write/draw on the walls, “You get soap in your mouth?” Well, no more! This technique encourages people to cover the walls with personal illustrations! Not only will it be fun for your employees, as a type of thrill of rebellion, it will entice them to share their thoughts and collaborate ideas.

If, for whatever reason you cannot paint your walls, consider purchasing a large whiteboard or corkboard to encourage employees to write ideas or pin up inspirational quotes.

Then, let the ideas flow, and watch as your office’s formerly dull walls turn into a beautiful, colorful foundation of inspiration!
